Below Abbie recounts her journey of returning to the sport she loves after rupturing her second ACL.
I find it quite hard trying to explain to people what returning to sport from an injury such as a knee reconstruction is like. I’ve learnt it’s something that nobody can understand or relate to unless they’ve been through it (or something similar) themselves.
I was 16 when I had my first knee reconstruction and comparing that to my second are two totally different experiences. Everything is harder to process and understand the first time. Returning to play seems almost impossible and I nearly gave up. You don’t have the support, knowledge or facilities like elite athletes so you’re totally relying on your own motivation. Going from a team sport where you always train together and are accountable for each, to having to train alone was a big adjustment. But I did get through it and after a long 14 months was finally able to play again.
was absolutely devastating finding out I had torn my second ACL. I had finally got back to playing well again so it was extremely disappointment. My prior knowledge meant I got straight into rehab so I could set myself up for a strong recovery. I had a huge support network and the most beneficial thing was having Callan there with me from day 1. I had enough knowledge to get me back to everyday life movements but Callan has allowed me to become the strongest and fittest version of myself, whilst also being able to build my confidence back which is another important component.
